In our innovation-driven and knowledge-based economy, intangible assets like intellectual property (“IP”) such as patents, copyrights, trademark, trade secrets, along with brand value and corporate reputation play a key part in driving financial value and providing enterprises with a unique competitive edge. Over the past decade, IP has emerged as a valuable asset class in financial markets. The capital markets and financial system have responded to this shift and have evolved new strategies and techniques and create new mechanisms and investment models to provide risk capital to companies with significant value in IP. This program provides an overview of the investment banking and corporate finance strategies, techniques and practices to monetize IP and make it bankable in both the conventional and Islamic finance context. This program highlights the challenges and complexity of dealing with IP as a financial asset class and uses real life case studies to demonstrate how investors and investee companies can structure commercial deals to fully maximize the value of IP to drive profitability and corporate growth.
